Lifting at height of loads on pallets inside construction sites
This guide is intended to clarify and analyse the requirements to be met by lifting forks as well as the loads to be lifted; it is also intended to illustrate the safety rules to be observed in lifting operations according to the current standard.
LIFTING FORK
Since the introduction of lifting equipment (e.g. tower cranes or crane trucks) for lifting loads of bricks such as bricks, blocks, tiles, materials for coatings, etc. at construction sites, the lifting fork
has always been used, despite the prohibition of Presidential Decree 164 of 07/01/56 (paragraph 4) on the “ascent and descent of loads” which states as follows: “the lifting of bricks, stones, gravel and other small materials must be carried out exclusively by means of buckets or metal boxes; simple platforms and slings are not allowed”. The CEN European Committee for Standardization has developed the standard EN 13155:2003 “Lifting equipment – Safety – Removable load-handling equipment”, ratified by the President of UNI Italian National Standardization Organization by resolution of 5 October 2004, thus acquiring the status of national standard. Since the introduction of this standard, which specifies the safety requirements for removable load-handling equipment for lifting equipment, an attempt has been made to give more precise rules on the use of the fork which, in spite of the ban, was in fact being used for lifting bricks at all heights. In 2009 the standard was updated in some normative references and in various parts of the text as well as adding the appendix ZB.
